Web Monitoring Methods
Using Right Web Monitor you can monitor various Internet resources for
changes. Every kind of resource requires a special checking method to
get relevant result. Usually Right Web Monitor automatically decides
which method to use with certain resource, however you can adjust that
manually if you want to use another one. Here goes the list with
checking methods and short explanations how they work:
- HTTP/HTTPS resources checking methods:
- Resource Size/Date/Time comparing - this method is suitable
for static documents, binary files etc. This is the fastest
checking method and it uses the lowest amount of Internet traffic
because Right Web Monitor asks a web site to return only size and
date/time of the last resource update without accessing to
resource content. After receiving the response from the web site
Right Web Monitor compares is with the results of previous check
and presumes that resource has been modified if the results differ
from each other. This check method isn't suitable for checking
dinamically generated web pages (various asp and php scripts etc.)
since usually website returns zero last modification date. It is
recommended to use the next checking method to check such pages.
- Exact Content Analysis - this method is slower and consumes
more traffic compared to previous one, since Right Web Monitor
downloads entire webpage and compares it with previously saved
page. The webpage is presumed changed if they differ from each
other. This method isn't suitable for checking large binary files
because the amount of Internet traffic it uses (the bigger the
file - the bigger the amount of traffic if will use). Also this
method isn't suitable for pages with dinamic elements (like
clocks, visitor counters, dinamic links etc.) since every time
Right Web Monitor will check such pages it will receive different
results (new clock values, increased visitor counters, new links
etc.). It is recommended to use the next checking method to
monitor such kind of pages.
- Smart Content Analysis - this method is also more time/traffic
consuming then "Resource Size/Date/Time" method, because when
using it Right Web Monitor also downloads entire web document to
compare it with the previously saved one, however comparison goes
different way. The program uses various user-defined analysing
rules to check the document for changes. You can learn more about
these rules by reading
Smart Content Analysis Check Method document.
- RSS feeds processing - this method is suitable for cheking RSS
feeds. When using it Right Web Monitor just downloads RSS feed and
check if there are something new in it.
- FTP resources checking methods:
- Single file checking - Right Web Monitor asks FTP
server for file size and last modification date/time and compares
them with previously saved values. Resource is presumed changed if
those differ from each other.
- Folder monitoring - Right Web Monitor asks FTP server
for file listing for the folder and compares it with previously
saved one. Resource is presumed changed if those differ from each
other (i.e. some files have been added, changed or deleted).
- Folder monitoring with subfolders processing - Right
Web Monitor asks FTP server for file listing for the folder,
fetches the names of subfolders and asks file listings for them
and so on until the lowest level subfolders. After receiving all
the listings the program compares entire listing with previously
saved one. Resource is presumed changed if those differ from each
other (i.e. some files have been added, changed or deleted)
considering extension filters (i.e. presume resource modified if
any files changed, if files with certain extensions changed or if
any but files with certain extensions changed). This feature is
avaiable in Pro version only.
- POP3 mail box checking - Right Web Monitor asks mail
server for letter list and checks it. Resource is presumed modified
if any new letters are detected.
- ICMP site availability checking (ping) - Right Web
Monitor sends ICMP packets to a host and checks received results.
The program will notify you if percetage of losses is equal or above
certain number (configurable), if the response time goes upper then
certain value (configurable) or if "Up"/"Down" state changes
(configurable). This feature is available in Pro version only.
So, as you can see, using Right Web Monitor you can check Internet
resources exactly as you need. Now let's see how to configure Right
Web Monitor to check different resource types. Here goes the list with
links to pages which contain detailed descriptions of how to do that:
- Single web page (direct access) monitoring
- Single web page (access through login page) monitoring
- RSS feeds monitoring
- Entire website monitoring
- FTP single file monitoring
- FTP folder monitoring
- FTP folder with subfolders processing monitoring
- POP3 mail box checking
- ICMP site availability checking
